Douglas C. "Bumpy" Thompson

June 24, 1944 — January 26, 2023

Douglas C. "Bumpy" Thompson, 78, of Gilbertsville, passed away on Thursday, January 26, 2023 in Plymouth Meeting, PA.

Born June 24, 1944 in Quincy, Massachusetts, he was the son of the late David E. and Florence L. (Wilson) Thompson. He and the love of his life, his wife of 56 years, Carol J. (Kress) Thompson, were married on November 4, 1966 in Hingham, Massachusetts.

Bumpy served his country honorably and faithfully as a member of the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War.

Bumpy graduated from Hingham High School and went on to attend Quincy Electrical School in Boston studying to be an electrician. He received his Associates Degree in Electrical Engineering from the Univerisity of Michigan and also studied at Villanova University and Penn State University.

Bumpy spent the majority of his career working at the Limerick Nuclear Generating Station. He began working for Bechtel Power Corporation and continued under the ownership of PECO and Exelon until his retirement. After retirement, Bumpy continued as a consultant to Exelon for many years.

Bumpy was very active in the community. He was a member of the Republican Committee of Montgomery County where he volunteered working at voting polls. He was also a member of the American Legion Carl Anspach Post #732, Bernville, and a Master Mason and member of the Centre Lodge #273, F & AM, Midland, Michigan. He was a member of Trinity EC Church, Boyertown, a commissioner with the Pine Forge Athletic Association and truly enjoyed hunting, fishing, and especially gardening. Bumpy was an award winning beer chemist and achieved an advanced belt in Judo.

Most of all, Bumpy loved his grandchildren. He was so proud of Joseph, Paige, Charlee and Lorel, and was always in attendance at their many dance, baseball and lacrosse events. He was also so happy when he found out recently that he was going to be a grandfather again.

Surviving in addition to his wife, Carol, are his children, Loree L. (Thompson) Stein, wife of Jeffrey A. Stein Jr., Perkiomenville, and Paul J. Thompson, husband of Caitlin D. (Anderson) Thompson, Chelsea, Maine, and by his grandchildren, Joseph, Paige, Charlee and Lorel, and by his fifth grandchild on the way. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters, Virginia Thompson, William Thomson and his wife, Cindy, Glen Thompson and his wife, Carolyn, and Colleen Thompson, and by a longtime family friend, Susan Vetterlein.

Along with his parents, Bumpy was preceded in death by his brothers, David Thompson, Gary Thompson and Mark Thompson.

Services for Bumpy will be held on Tuesday, January 31, 2023 beginning at 11:00 am with a Masonic Service, followed by his Memorial Service, at Trinity Evangelical Congregational Church, 250 Swinehart Road, Boyertown, followed by full Military Honors at the church. A visitation will be held Tuesday from 10:00 am until time of services at the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bumpy's memory to the Boyertown Midget Baseball League (BMBL), 355 Renninger Road, Perkiomenville, PA 18074, or to the Elevate Student Ministries, 250 Swinehart Road, Boyertown, PA 19512.
