Elizabeth Ann (Betsy) Olson, 76, passed away on Monday, October 24, 2022 at home in Maidencreek Township after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. She was the beloved wife of Richard H. Olson with whom she had shared 30 years of marriage.
Elizabeth was the only daughter of Earl Cornelius Buchanan and his wife Lorena (Anderson) Buchanan, of Flemington NJ. She graduated from Hunterdon Central High School and Albright College where she received a degree in English and Education.
In her youth, Elizabeth traveled extensively; she lived in New Zealand for 18 months as an exchange student during her junior and senior years of high school and 10 months in Germany and Europe during the Vietnam War.
Career-wise, she worked for the Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. for 35 years, first as a Field Director working directly with girls and Girl Scout leaders and lastly as CEO of the Great Valley Girl Scout Council, working with the Board of Directors on administration and finance.
Elizabeth retired in 2001 and since then had been enjoying her hobbies of antiquing, cooking, gardening, and lunching with friends. She and Richard had great fun taking several Caribbean cruises and she spent many happy hours cheering on the Eagles, her favorite football team. Betsy was an expert at video poker and always had a funny story to share with everyone, including her "temporary" friends in Atlantic City.
Elizabeth will be remembered for her remarkable organizational skills, her tireless work ethic, and her competitive spirit. Her inner child loved celebrating the holidays and trimming her Christmas tree. She took great pride in making the entire Thanksgiving dinner from scratch and her flair for home decorating was unmatched.
In addition to her husband, Elizabeth is survived by her cousin John Cole and his wife, Star, of Cape Coral, FL, her sister-in-law Barbara (Olson) Patchen and her husband, Kenton, of Genoa, NY, and her many dear friends, including Don Spence and Trice Beittel of Sinking Spring, PA.
Services will be private at the convenience of the family. As per Elizabeth's request, donations may be made to the Schuylkill Valley Community Library (berkslibraries.org/svcl) or to Berks Encore.org.
