Harvey L. Schaeffer, 95, of Blandon, passed away on Sunday, September 30, 2018 at his home.
Born February 13, 1923 in Wernersville, he was the son of the late Rueben and Edna (Dundore) Schaeffer. He and his bride of 41 years, Gloria M. (Schade) Schaeffer, were married on August 15, 1977 in Elton, Maryland.
Harvey served his country honorably and faithfully in the United States Army during World War II. He was attached to the Black Widow Squadron of the 225th Search Light Battalion. He was awarded 5 bronze stars for his dedication and efforts while serving in Normandy, the Rhineland, Northern France, Ardennes and Central Europe.
After returning home, Harvey worked for the civil service. He was assigned to the Defense Contract Office in Reading as a Supervisory Traffic Management Specialist. He was proud of saving the government one and a half million dollars by shipping cargo via rail instead of motor vehicles.
Harvey was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ, Kutztown, where he was a past member of consistory. He was a 1941 graduate of Wernersville High School and loved playing bingo online, golfing, word puzzles and sharing his war stories.
Surviving in addition to his wife Gloria, are his two step-sons, Randy C. Stitzel, husband of Sherry L. (Esterly) Stitzel, Fleetwood and Kevin P. Stitzel, Fleetwood, his step-daughter-in-law, Sarah E. Kline, Fleetwood, his step-grandchildren, Chris, Amy, Ryan, Tyler, Noah and Anthony and his step-great-grandchildren, Paige, Jared, Nick, Cooper, Parker, Addyson and one on the way.
Harvey is also survived by his brother, Donald Schaeffer, Florida and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Edith Howell.
A Memorial Celebration of Life for Harvey will be held on Monday, October 8, 2018 at 11:00 am at St. John's United Church of Christ, 257 W. Walnut Street, Kutztown, with Rev. Scott M. Sanders officiating. A visitation will be held on Monday from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at the church.
Burial will take place later with full military honors at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville.
