James B. Peters, 91, of Kutztown and The Villages, Florida passed away at his home in Kutztown.
Born Aug 1, 1924, he was the son of the late Gertrude (Leffler) and Burleigh A. Peters. He and his wife, Peggy (Saylor) Peters, were married on Aug 21, 1966 and would have celebrated their 49th anniversary this Friday.
James was a 1942 graduate of Altoona High School. He was also a graduate of Susquehanna University and Bucknell University. He was a World War II Veteran, serving for four years in the United States Navy, having enlisted after the attack on Pearl Harbor.
James was a counselor and teacher in public schools for 19 years and an Associate Professor and Counselor at Kutztown University for 25 years. He spent 44 years coaching high school and college sports. He also served as a Berks County Basketball Official for many years. In 1982, James was inducted into the Susquehanna University Sports Hall of Fame. He was a three-sport star, winning 12 letters and led Crusader Grid-Squad in scoring both before and after he served in World War II. While at Susquehanna University, he played for legendary Coach Amos Alonzo Stagg and his son.
James was a private pilot and enjoyed flying his Piper Tri-Pacer. He was a member of St. John's UCC,. He had been a member of the Lyons Senior Softball Team and enjoyed motorcycles, playing cards, golfing, softball, tennis, basketball and pool.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, Deborah J. (Peters) Dagle, wife of Stephen Dagle; James J. Peters, husband of Raquel Peters; and Dr. Jamie S. Peters, wife of Duncan Seffern II. He is also survived by his granddaughters, Hilary Dagle and Robyn Peters and his Mother-In-Law, Sarah R. Saylor. He was preceded in death by his sister Janet Kunes.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, Aug 21, 2015 at 11 am at St. John's United Church of Christ, 257 W. Walnut St, Kutztown. A reception will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Attn: Research, 399 Market St, Ste 102, Philadelphia, PA 19106 or to your favorite charity.
