John R. Scalese Sr.

John R. Scalese, Sr., 89, of Rockland Township, passed away on Sunday morning, September 24, 2023, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

Born April 15, 1934 in Reading, he was the son of the late Ralph and Helen (Beam) Scalese. His wife, Nancy L. (Paine) Scalese, died on June 14, 2001.

John served his country honorably and faithfully as a member of the US Army.

John worked as a set up man on an engine lathe at Textile Industries, later Rockwell, for 37 years. He attended St. Paul's UCC, Fleetwood, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and checking out the girls.

John is survived by his companion of 21 years, Arlene N. (Miller) Smith, his son, John R. Scalese Jr., husband of Robin J. (Groff) Scalese, Mertztown, his granddaughter, Heather Stricker, wife of Ryan Stricker, Reading, his two great-grandsons, Mason and Colby, and by his sister, June Williams, Reading.

Along with his parents, and wife, Nancy, John was preceded in death by his siblings, Rayfield Scalese, Darlene Hale, Shirley Scalese, Franklin Reichert, Robert Reichert, and Marie-Ellena Moyer.

Funeral Services for John will be held on Monday, October 2, 2023 at 11:00 am at Walbert Funeral Home & Crematory, 14390 Kutztown Rd, Fleetwood.
Burial will follow in Berks County Memorial Gardens. A viewing will be held Monday from 10 to 11 am at the funeral home.
