Mrs. Joy M. (Hawthorne) McCarty

April 19, 1939 — March 7, 2023

Mrs. Joy M. (Hawthorne) McCarty, 83, of Ladis Store, passed away on Tuesday, March 7, 2023 at the Lutheran Home at Topton.

Born April 19, 1939, in New York City, NY, she was the daughter of the late Marilyn (Hawthorne) Derrickson, and Zachary Scott. She and the love of her life, her husband of 64 years, Robert E. McCarty Sr., were married in September 1959.

Joy was a champion of animals and especially loved her horses. She raced and bred thoroughbred horses for many years and owned and operated the Yellow House Saddle Shop selling English tack and other supplies. She was a member of The Jockey Club and the Pennsylvania Horse Breeders Association.

Joy was a 1957 graduate of Cleveland Heights High School, Cleveland, OH, and went on to graduate from the Bessie V. Hicks School of Dramatic Arts, Philadelphia, where she met her husband. For most of her life, Joy cultivated space outside in nature to garden and care for her beloved animals. She also enjoyed knitting, was a skilled antique collector, and lifelong supporter of the arts. She could be found mastering recipes and then sharing the rewards with friends and family.

In addition to her husband, Bob, Joy is survived by her three children, Erin C. (McCarty) Keegan, wife of Robert J. Keegan, Mohrsville, and Justin K. McCarty, husband of Lisa (Jancke) McCarty, Telford. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Ethan, Taylor and her husband, Nick, Katharine, Sara and her husband, Carsten, Brendan, Evan and Kieran, Colin, Amelia, and their mother Lisa Vasquez, and by her great-grandchildren, Alice, Noah, Lili, Riley, Jolene, and Asher, and by her friend and longtime caretaker Catherine Reitnauer.

Along with her parents, Joy was preceded in death by her son, Daniel N. McCarty.

Services for Joy will be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations are encouraged to be made in Joy's memory to the Pennsylvania SPCA, 350 East Erie Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19134.
