Norman L. Reed, 95, of Fleetwood, passed away on Saturday, April 1, 2017 at Reading Hospital and Medical Center, West Reading, surrounded by his loving family.
Born April 11, 1921 in Klinesville, PA, he was the son of the late George W. and Ella M. (Stein) Reed. His wife of 66 years, Verletta E. (Bray) Reed, passed away on June 22, 2011. They were married on September 26, 1944.
Norman worked as a machinist and toolmaker in the maintenance department of Carpenter Steel for 46 years, retiring on June 30, 1987. He was truly a craftsman and enjoyed his work as a machinist. In the old days he would work on his cars and he also loved woodworking.
Norman served his country honorably in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a 1938 graduate of Kutztown Area High School and a member of the Kutztown Historical Society. He was a faithful member of Victory Baptist Church, Reading.
Norman is survived by his three children, Joann L. (Reed) Bertolet, wife of Richard A. Bertolet, Maidencreek Twp, David A. Reed, husband of Rita A. (Wilson) Reed, Blandon, and Ruth A. (Reed) Hoff, wife of Donald S. Hoff, Harleysville, PA. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Amy Bertolet, Orlando, FL, Erika Robertson, wife of Jeremy Robertson, Ocala, FL, Michele Kurtz, wife of Joshua Kurtz, Fleetwood, Jenna Hoff, Lynchburg, VA, Joshua Reed, Louisville, KY, Donnie Hoff, husband of Julia Hoff, Allentown and Kevin Hoff, Lynchburg, Va, and his great grandchildren, Jacob, Nolan, Benjamin, Matthew, Westin and Elijah.
In addition to his parents, Norman was preceded in death by his brother, Ralph W. Reed.
Funeral Services for Norman will be held on Saturday, April 8, 2017 at 10:00 am at Walbert Funeral Home & Cremation Services, PC, 14390 Kutztown Rd, Fleetwood, with Pastor John Conover officiating. Burial will follow in Fleetwood Cemetery with full military honors provided by the US Navy and the Honor Guard of the American Legion, Ray A. Master Post 217, Topton.
Viewings will be held for Norman on Friday evening, April 7, 2017 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm and again on Saturday morning, April 8, 2017 from 9:00 to 10:00 am at the funeral home.
