Oliver J. Long, Jr., 85, of Catasauqua, passed away on Thursday, November 29, 2018 at Lehigh Valley Hospital – Muhlenberg, Bethlehem, PA.
Born August 10, 1933 in Wilson, he was the son of the late Florence (Meyers) and Oliver J. Long Sr. He and his wife of 56 years, Dolores J. (Graybill) Long, were married on February 3, 1962 in Easton.
Oliver served his country honorably and faithfully in the US Air Force during the Korean War. He went on to work as a mechanic at Ingersold Rand, Phillipsburg, NJ before beginning a long career as an aicraft mechanic. Oliver worked for 29 years for Bethlehem Steel at Lehigh Valley International Airport. After their closing, he continued as an aircraft mechanic for Hess Department Stores, Northeast Jets and New World Aviation. He was honored with the Charles Taylor Master Mechanic Award for 50 years as an aircraft mechanic.
Oliver was a member of the Lehigh Valley Quarter Midget Club and a 1952 graduate of Wilson Area High School.
Surviving in addition to his wife, Dolores, are his four daughters, Tami D. (Long) Berkes, wife of Mark J. Berkes, Lehighton, Crystale A. (Long) Ungiran, wife of David D. Ungiran, Mt. Bethel, Wendy L. (Long) Panasik, wife of Barry Panasik, Bath and Robin S. (Long) Kroschwitz, wife of Randy A. Kroschwitz, Bath. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Jason, Melyssa, Kelsey, Brian, Caisey and Hailey and his great-grandchildren, Madison, Gavyn, Shelby, Karson and Aaden.
Along with his parents, Oliver was preceded in death by his sisters, Betty Stamets and Gertrude Moore and his brothers, William and John Long.
Funeral Services for Oliver will be held on Wednesday, December 5, 2018 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 1335 Old Carriage Rd, Northampton, with the Rev. Gary L. Walbert officiating. Burial with US Air Force Military Honors will follow in Cedar Hill Memorial Park, Allentown.
Viewings for Oliver will be held on Tuesday evening, December 4, 2018 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the church and again on Wednesday morning, December 5, 2018 from 10:00 to 11:00 am at the church.
