Roy F. Shomgard, 87, of Fleetwood, passed away early Wednesday morning, May 31, 2017 at Reading Hospital.
Born November 13, 1929 in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late George and Emma (Gutmann) Shomgard. He and his wife of 62 years, Marie M. (Kahl) Shomgard, were married on December 18, 1954 in Newmanstown.
Roy was a longtime employee for Met-Ed. He retired in 1989 after a 36 year career. His last position was as Central Division Superintendent of the Line Departments, which he held for 18 years.
Roy served our country honorably and faithfully in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He worked with the US Army Corp of Engineers and was stationed in France. He was a 1949 graduate of Reading High School and a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Fleetwood. Roy loved boating and fishing on the Chesapeake Bay, Lake George and the Thousand Islands. He also enjoyed his many antique search trips.
In addition to his wife, Marie, Roy is survived by his children, Mark R. Shomgard, Fleetwood and Lisa M. (Shomgard) Watchorn, wife of Stephen Watchorn, Muhlenberg Twp and his granddaughters, Amanda and Natalie.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Raymond Shomgard.
Funeral Services for Roy will be held on Monday, June 5, 2017 at 12:00 pm at Walbert Funeral Home & Cremation Services, PC, 14390 Kutztown Rd, Fleetwood, with Rev. Patrick W. Morris officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hills Memorial Park, Reiffton. A viewing will be held Monday, June 5, from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm at the funeral home.
