Samuel G. Borrell, 92, of Fleetwood, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, December 14, 2022 at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township, PA.
Born November 18, 1930 in Fleetwood, he was the son of the late Arthur R. and Helen M. (Reinert) Borrell. He and his wife of 51 years, Cynthia L. (Schoedler) Borrell, were married on July 17, 1971 at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Fleetwood.
Sam spent most of his life in service to others. He served his country honorably and faithfully as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Air Force during the Korean War.
He also served as the Mayor of the Borough of Fleetwood for 12 years and as Chief of Police and a councilman for the Borough of Lyons.
Sam spent 6 years caring for a special needs student in the Fleetwood Area School District and also delivered prescriptions to shut-ins in the Fleetwood area. He spent many hours volunteering at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Fleetwood, where he was on church council and taught Sunday School for 17 years. Sam also was President of the Eastern Berks Branch of the Lutheran Brotherhood, served as President and Secretary of the Fleetwood Lions Club and served as Judge of Elections for Fleetwood.
Sam worked for 36 years as an automotive electrician for Mack Trucks. He also worked at Rauch's Drug Store, Fleetwood and for 20 years for the Fleetwood Area School District as a para professional in special needs. He worked as a member of the staff for the Honorable Judge Jeffery K. Sprecher in the Berks County Court of Common Pleas.
Sam was a 1949 graduate of Fleetwood Area High School. In honor of all of Sam's accomplishments, the Fleetwood Area High School recognized Sam with the Distinguished Alumni Award on May 19, 2016.
Sam was well known for his gardens at his home. He was even featured in the Reading Eagle for his beautiful plants and flowers. Sam also loved wood carving, reading, volunteering, and doing jigsaw and crossword puzzles.
In addition to the love of his life, his wife, Cindy, Sam is survived by six children, Daniel Borrell, husband of Veronica Borrell, Edmond, OK, Gale Hunt, Wausu, Nebraska, Carol Alexander, wife of Barry Alexander, Gilbert, AZ, Cynthia Smith, Frederick, OK, Michael Rauenzahn, husband of Jayne Rauenzahn, Collegeville and Cathy Rauenzahn, Northampton. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Matthew, Michael, Leila, Angela, Jordan, Jasmine, Jimmy, Sarah, Tyler, Jason, Carter, Avery, Christian, Jenna and Jensen, his 15 great-grandchildren, and by his brother and sisters, Arthur Borrell, Dorothy Miller, Joan Bailey, and Miriam Rauenzahn.
Along with his parents, Sam was preceded in death by his children, David Borrell and Lynn (Borrell) King, and by his grandson, J.D. Hunt.
Memorial Services for Sam will be held on Friday, December 30, 2022 at 11:00 am at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 117 E. Arch St, Fleetwood, PA with the Rev. Thomas Lang, officiating. Military honors provided by the Ray A. Master Post 217, American Legion Honor Guard, Topton, will be rendered for Sam immediately following the memorial services at the church.
Visitations for Sam will be held on Thursday evening, December 29, 2022 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Walbert Funeral Home & Crematory, 14390 Kutztown Rd, Fleetwood, and again on Friday morning, December 30, 2022 from 10:00 to 11:00 am at the church.
In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to be made in Sam's honor to the St. Paul's Lutheran Church Youth Fund, 117 E. Arch St, Fleetwood, PA 19522.
